layla

I awoke to a girl
at the foot of my bed
quietly sobbing in white
ghost hands held her face
beneath harlequin lace
just hidden from my sight
half asleep I reached out
touching her shoulder cold
and trembling with fright
her head turned away sending
chills through my soul
for death sat beside me
that night

walking into the bar
layla came to me smiling
dimples deep in her heart
playing out these roles
that we cherish and hold
her eyes opened into
calm reflecting pools
with tenderness so strong
we danced and flirted
like fools

feeling her beside me
her hands clutching mine
embracing my words
she forgot about time
one day she just passed
without saying goodbye
then suddenly I heard
that she died
