the ghost

oh mommy - I'm so scared
there is a ghost in my room
that won't leave me alone
tonight it appeared as a woman
so beautiful and frail
long dark hair and a silky dress
and when I held her she closed
her eyes and melted in my arms
then the lights would not work
and water was seeping everywhere

oh mommy - I'm so scared
I saw the ghost as a small boy
playing and tossing himself
joyfully through the air
bumping into furniture laughing
I chased him through my rooms
that now look so strange to me
where is this place where I dream
where fear lies in wait for me?
he vanished when I reached out
and tried to pull him near

oh mommy - I'm so scared
I fell over my bed and found
you lying there under blankets
so warm and tightly bound
not there just moments before
I held your face inside my hands
looking softly into your eyes
you have become so wrinkled
and hollow after so many years
while death hid you in disguise
are you going to follow me home?
yes mommy - I am here

oh mommy - I'm so scared
the ghost came home last night
he sat down and started writing
some words as his face began
to shine with tears of sadness
his drink had pushed him far inside
too deep for him to hear
but he begged me for my help
and a place to sleep at last
for as long as his heart can see
I held his hand - he disappeared
and I saw the ghost was me
